PRESCOTT - Some people at the courthouse plaza art fair celebrating Labor Day on Monday didn't really know why the holiday is called "Labor Day," but they were happy for a three-day weekend nonetheless.

VFW building rising in Prescott Valley
PRESCOTT VALLEY - The long-awaited dream of a lodge for Veterans of Foreign Wars Mingus Mountain Post 10227 is finally coming into fruition.

Work started this past Wednesday on a 3,000-square-foot metal building on Fifth Street just below the Moose Lodge, according to Philip Young, past commander of the post.

Student drug arrests top 1 per week in Prescott
EDITOR'S NOTE: This school year has already seen at least four drug-related arrests in the past two weeks on Prescott Unified School District campuses, reinforcing the drug education needed for young students. We have examined the campus drug arrests and awareness during the 2009-10 school year. No names of those arrested are used since the students involved are minors.

From the beginning of the 2009-10 school year until the last day of school, 59 children - more than one child a week - had been arrested for drug offenses, said Lt. Andy Reinhardt, spokesman for the Prescott Police Department.

Endangered fish find home at Rio Salado Audubon Center
Two endangered species of native fish became the newest residents to the outdoor ponds at the Nina Mason Pulliam Rio Salado Audubon Center in Phoenix.

Nearly 500 desert pupfish and 550 Gila topminnow were released this past Tuesday into the center's ponds as part of a program aimed at allowing private landowners to participate in the conservation of threatened and endangered species.

P&Z Commission considers guesthouse, ordinances
PRESCOTT - A guesthouse will be the topic of a meeting of the Yavapai County Planning and Zoning Commission Wednesday.

Residents Charles and Penney Robertson asked the commission to approve a use permit for the guesthouse on a 35,000-square-foot property at the corner of Idylwild and Thumb Butte roads in Prescott.

High schools throughout the area issue identification badges to their students at the beginning of the school year. Typically, the badges include a student's name, class and picture.

Whether students must wear their badge or just have them while on campus varies from district to district, sometimes from high school to high school within the same district.

BLM losing patience with Agua Fria rule-breakers
Citing an increasing problem with illegal vehicles driving in the Agua Fria River in the Agua Fria National Monument, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management plans to erect river barriers.

The BLM is asking the public to attend a meeting about the subject at 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Cordes Lakes Community Center. After a short presentation, citizens can ask questions and make comments, said Amanda James, monument natural resource specialist.

Former veterans agency director Patrick Chorpenning pleads guilty
The Arizona Attorney General's Office announced Wednesday that Patrick Chorpenning Sr., 63, of Peoria, who served as director of the Arizona Department of Veterans Services (AZDVS) between 1999 and 2007, has pleaded guilty to two felony charges in Maricopa County Superior Court.

Man arrested on charges of possession of marijuana for sale
Prescott police arrested a man Monday on charges including possession of marijuana for sale after he told officers that he'd been selling marijuana to some people, mainly friends, for the past three months.

An officer booked Alexander Guerrero, 20, of Prescott into the Yavapai County Jail in Camp Verde on charges of possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana for sale.

Man sentenced to probation on DUI charges
Yavapai County Superior Court Judge William T. Kiger sentenced Justin Kuchan to three years of supervised probation and $4,600 in fines and fees after he plead guilty to charges of aggravated DUI and operating a vehicle without a required ignition interlock device in early disposition court on Tuesday.

Kiger also recommended that Kuchan, 23, of Prescott, be screened for DUI court.
